THE FILM FAIR CAMDEN – SATURDAY 13th FEBRUARY 2016

Now in it’s 31st year, The Film Fair at Camden just keeps getting bigger and better and starts off 2016 with three special guests who have all made an impact in the world of horror! First up is the British horror legend Emily Booth, star of numerous independent horror films (including Evil Aliens, Doghouse, Inbred), magazine columnist, writer, producer, director and presenter on the Horror Channel – is there anything this girl can’t do?

Next we have movie poster artist Graham Humphreys who has gained legions of fans over the years due to his amazing talent and winning personality. Throughout the eighties Graham designed and illustrated UK movie campaigns such as Dream Demon, Basket Case, Evil Dead and the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise and today seems busier than ever with his work on numerous DVD releases, various commissions as well as exhibitions of his work.

Finally we have popular television star Nicholas Ball who appeared in arguably the greatest ever episode of the Hammer House of Horror tv series – “The House That Bled to Death”! Ball has also starred in EastEnders, Footballers’ Wives, the sci-fi horror movie Lifeforce and the successful detective show Hazell.

There are also a whole ton of stalls specialising in movie memorabilia, horror merchandise, monster magazines, DVDs, posters, T-shirts, books and so much more for the dedicated film and horror fan and this all takes place at the legendary Electric Ballroom from 10:00am – 4:00pm – right next to Camden Town tube station – and the entrance is only £3 for adults!!!

The Camden Film Fair is looking to expand and is particularly interested in traders who deal in comics, vinyl (including movie soundtracks), movie related toys (including Star Wars and other fantasy blockbusters old and new), horror film clothing and collectibles and Manga merchandise so if you would like to book a stand or require more information just email Camden Film Fair at info@midnight-media.net – or you can call on 01832 731774 (10am – 6pm).

Movie review – ALIEN (1979) by Geetha Stachowiak

British director Ridley Scott’s landmark 1979 sci-fi thriller Alien is about seven charmers stuck on a mining ship out in deep space with a creature that they unknowingly pick up while futzing around on some planetoid. So it’s your typical “monster in the house” formula, but the sets are so creepy, the soundtrack so disturbing, and the creature so evil, it’s heart-warming. Artist H. R. Giger apparently delved really deep somewhere in his brain and what he came up with is a cutie you’re not gonna forget. As for the hatchlings, you’ll love the Chestburster—YouTube has some adorable clips.

Not to be outdone by these delightful contenders is the android toting the company’s agenda. The crew ends up as lunch—all except for Sigourney Weaver, who made her mark on geeks everywhere with the panty scene… just kidding. It was her kickass leadership skills (the panties weren’t bad either). Her return to civilization in the escape pod spawned sequels that well… tried pretty hard. So check it out. I think you’ll see why folks willingly kiss Sir Scott’s knighted ass even though he’s A Bitch to Work for. Hey, awesomeness comes at a price. Just try asking Michael Bay to make a movie without CGI.

THE RETURN OF “HORROR-ON-SEA”!

horroronsea2016

In January this year, Space Monsters editor and publisher Cyberschizoid (AKA Richard Gladman) popped down to Southend for Horror-on-Sea 2015 with scream queen Dani Thompson to watch a screening of indie horror film Serial Kaller. We had such a blast that we thought we would spread the word about Horror-on-Sea 2016 taking place over TWO weekends in January!

Here is the official word from Festival Director Paul Cotgrove:

“Well, we’re all set for Horror-on-Sea 2016, and what a line up we have for you!

In fact, the response from filmmakers has been so great that, once again, we’ve extended the festival over the following weekend. So, at Southend, the horror never ends – or, rather, it lasts for two whole weekends!

As before, many filmmakers will be joining us, and the bar will once again be a hive of activity between screenings as they chat to festivalgoers. We are the ‘friendly festival’, and you can be sure of a warm welcome as you step out of the January cold.

In addition to the wonderful line up of ‘horrorific’ films, all supported by tasty shorts, our good friend, and local horror legend, Pat Higgins, will be back with another Masterclass, “Watch Horror. Write Horror. Make Horror”, at which he will inform and entertain in his own inimitable style. That will be followed by the World Premiere of his new film The House on the Witchpit, a ‘festival first’ in that he is revealing nothing at all about this – not even a teaser trailer – in advance, and it will never again be shown in this version! So do join Pat for ‘Secret Cinema’, the Higgins way! We are also delighted to be hosting the World Premiere of The Snarling, Pablo Raybould’s horrifically scary and very funny take on a classic movie monster that will be a highlight of the festival.

So why not make a real break of it, and stay at the festival venue, the Park Inn Palace Hotel, for the first weekend? Special festival rates are just £65 for B&B for one night (single or double occupancy) or £130 for B&B for three nights (single or double). Call 01702 455111 and quote “Horror-on-Sea”.

Tickets-wise, best value of all are the weekend passes, saving you a massive £45 over the entire festival, but excellent value day passes are also available, and individual tickets are only £5. So grab your tickets while you can, and I’ll see you at ‘Spooky Southend’ in January.”

CLASSIC HAMMER HORROR RETURNS TO THE HORROR CHANNEL!

HorrorChannel-Hammer-Collage2

Those frighteningly awesome folk at the Horror Channel have done it again! Yep, their awesome season of Hammer Horror Saturday Night Double Bills is back from November 7th including some very cool network premieres. Now you can relive those halcyon days of the old BBC Horror Double Bills (sort of!) in the comfort of your own home. So snuggle up with your very own Bride of Frankenstein, Husband from Outer Space or Best Fiend and let’s see what’s on offer in the coming weeks…

November 7th – The Curse Of The Werewolf/The Gorgon
The Curse Of The Werewolf was Oliver Reed’s first big screen lead and he excels as Leon Corledo, a young man raised in the home of Don Alfredo Corledo (Clifford Evans), his kind and loving adopted father. When he leaves to find work, Leon discovers that he has increasingly violent urges each full moon. Although these tendencies are calmed by Leon’s love for the beautiful Christina (Catherine Feller), he ultimately cannot contain his curse, given to his raped mother, and transforms into a werewolf, terrorising the Spanish countryside. A mysterious monster is turning people to stone in a German village in The Gorgon. When his girlfriend is killed, Bruno (Jeremy Longhurst) becomes the prime suspect. His ensuing suicide seems to confirm his guilt, but professor Carl Maister (Christopher Lee) isn’t so sure. He thinks one of the villagers is possessed by the spirit of Megaera, sister to Medusa. Among the possible culprits are Dr. Namaroff (Peter Cushing), gorgeous nurse Carla (Barbara Shelley) and a mental patient

Saturday 14th – The Revenge Of Frankenstein/The Two Faces Of Doctor Jekyll
The second in the Hammer Frankenstein series and considered Terence Fisher’s best, General practitioner (Peter Cushing), now residing in the village of Carlsbruck is none other than our old friend, Victor Frankenstein. No one seems unduly concerned when the patients in a charity clinic begin losing their arms and legs during Dr. Stein’s emergency operations — no one except his young rival, Dr. Kleve (Kerwin Mathews). Full of clever (if gory) touches, The Revenge Of Frankenstein is among the best of Hammer Studio’s late-1950s films. Originally released in the UK as House Of Fright, The Two Faces Of Doctor Jekyll is a film version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Paul Massie plays Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde who wants to exact revenge on Paul Allen (Christopher Lee), who has been siphoning off Jekyll’s savings to finance his own gambling and womanising. In contrast to Stevenson’s story, director Terence Fisher ensures that there’s enough twists and turns to keep horror fans guessing.

Saturday 21st – The Evil Of Frankenstein/The Brides Of Dracula
Directed by Freddy Francis, The Evil Of Frankenstein is the third in the Hammer Frankenstein series, which sees Dr. Frankenstein (Peter Cushing) return destitute to his home village to recommence his experimental research into the reanimation of dead tissue. He stumbles upon his old monster suspended in ice and although he revives the creature, Frankenstein must seek the help of hypnotist Zoltan (Peter Woodthorpe) to repair its mind. Zoltan then assumes control of the monster, using him to wreak havoc. Director Terence Fisher followed the excellent Horror Of Dracula with the richly-coloured sequel The Brides Of Dracula. Though imprisoned in the family estate by his mother, Baron Meinster (David Peel) is released from his silver chains by an unsuspecting French teacher (Yvonne Monlaur), through which he gains access to a number of young women at a girls’ school. Fortunately, master vampire killer Dr. Van Helsing (Peter Cushing) is on the case. This is one of the first Hammer films to delve into the more sexual aspects of vampirism, with implicit suggestions of sadomasochism and homosexuality.

Saturday 28th – Night Creatures/Blood From The Mummy’s Tomb
Set in the 18th-century, Night Creatures is a engaging costume melodrama of skulduggery and stars Captain Collier (Patrick Allen), who is sent, with his crew, to investigate some coastal smuggling. However, when mysterious swamp phantoms appear, Captain Collier suspects that the odd village vicar (Peter Cushing) might be hiding something, and what better way to do that than by creating fortuitous ghosts to scare them away… Blood From The Mummy’s Tomb was the swan song for director Seth Holt who died shortly before filming was completed. An expedition led by Professor Fuchs (Andrew Keir) finds the cursed tomb of an evil Egyptian princess and discovers her perfectly preserved, severed hand, which sports a dazzling ruby ring. Several years later, Fuchs gives the ring to his young daughter (Valerie Leon), whereupon she slowly begins to take on the malevolent traits of its original wearer.
